David Gernant was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on November 4, 1943, son of Leonard and Frances Gernant. After graduating from Western Michigan University, Gernant attended Harvard School of Law. Gernant has served as an openly gay judge on the Portland District Court, Department 9. He has also been an active Gay Rights Activist in Portland, Oregon.
